Working visit by a delegation from the Department of Rural Economy and Agriculture of the African Union Commission to the headquarters of the Pan-African Agency of the Great Green Wall

February 24, 2020

A delegation from the Department of Rural Economy and Agriculture of the African Union Commission carried out a working visit to the Pan-African Agency of the Great Green Wall (PAGGW) from Monday 24 to Wednesday 25 February 2020. The delegation was led by Mr. Almami Dampha, Senior Policy Officer for Forest and Land Management, accompanied by Mr. Elvis Paul Tangem, Coordinator of the GGWSSI at the African Union Commission, and Mr. Kibru Nega, assistant at the African Union.

The delegation was received by the Executive Secretary of the PAGGW, who welcomed this initiative, the results of which should not only provide better visibility into the roles and missions of the Initiative’s institutional actors, but also forge synergies between the African Union Commission and the PAGGW in the effective implementation of the Initiative. As part of this visit, the delegation worked with the experts of the PAGGW’s technical departments (the Scientific and Technical Directorate and the Administrative and Financial Directorate).

The discussions covered matters relating to the recommendations of the 6th ordinary session of the Council of Ministers of the PAGGW, held on 30 June 2018 in Nouakchott, and those of the meeting on the steering of the Initiative held in Dakar (Senegal) in November 2019, with a view to achieving better synergy of action and revitalizing the collaboration between the AU, the political oversight body, and the PAGGW, the operational structure responsible for implementing the Initiative.

  • At the end of the discussions, the two (2) Parties agreed on:
    The essential need to work together to carry out joint actions to mobilize the resources needed to implement the Great Green Wall, drawing on the framework documents relating to resource mobilization and the action plans;
  • Regular consultation on activities likely to be of interest to both parties, in particular the National Great Green Wall Alliances, the Women’s Green Platform, the Youth Green Caravan and the Economic Forum on Great Green Wall Products, etc.;
  • The co-organization of joint activities during international events (COPs, international days, etc.)

A draft roadmap was developed to this end.
