President Goïta receives the Executive Secretary of the PAGGW and provides guidance

June 11, 2026

The President of the Transition, His Excellency Army General Assimi Goïta, received in audience this Friday 5 June 2026 Professor Almoustapha Garba, Executive Secretary of the Pan-African Agency of the Great Green Wall (PAGGW), in the presence of the Minister of the Environment, Sanitation and Sustainable Development, Ms Doumbia Mariam Tangara, who currently holds the presidency of the Council of Ministers of the Pan-African Agency of the Great Green Wall.

The Head of State provided clear guidance to accelerate the implementation of one of Africa’s largest environmental programmes.
Upon leaving the audience, Professor Garba expressed his satisfaction before the press, underlining the quality and clarity of the guidance received from the Head of State on all the points raised. The audience enabled the Executive Secretary to draw up a situational assessment of the PAGGW: achievements accomplished, ongoing concerns and future prospects. The objective is to accelerate the implementation of the decisions taken by the Head of State and the Malian Government in favour of the Great Green Wall initiative. “We had the honour of being received by His Excellency Army General Assimi Goïta, to whom we came to reiterate our thanks for the trust placed in our humble person. We took the opportunity to review the implementation of the organisation’s roadmap — achievements, concerns and prospects — with a view to accelerating the Great Green Wall initiatives,” declared Professor Almoustapha Garba.

He said he was particularly satisfied with the responsiveness and precision of the President of the Transition. On each point raised, General Goïta provided clear guidance intended to remove the obstacles to the execution of the Agency’s projects and programmes for the benefit of the populations. “On all the points raised, he gave very clear guidance to accelerate the implementation of the projects and programmes for the benefit of the populations, in order to achieve our ambitions. We were very satisfied,” rejoiced Professor Garba. The Executive Secretary also underlined the relevance of this meeting in the current Sahelian context. Land degradation, climate change and desertification constitute existential challenges for the populations of the Sahel, and Mali is no exception. He noted with satisfaction that these issues are now fully integrated into the country’s national development planning.
“At the heart of Africa’s development problems lies the question of the environment and climate change. In the Sahelian context, land degradation is a major concern. We have noted with satisfaction that, in Mali’s various planning frameworks, this concern is taken into account in a special way — it is at the very heart of the action,” he explained.
