About the Agency

The Pan-African Agency for the Great Green Wall (PAGGW) is an inter-state organization, with international legal capacity,

Our Mission

Desertification, climate change, and land degradation have a significant impact on the main drivers of economic growth, social cohesion, stability, and security in Sahelo-Saharan states. The persistent and growing repercussions of these challenges, despite various existing action plans, have highlighted the urgent need for a regional approach based on common commitment and concerted actions.

In response to this critical situation, the Heads of State and Government: Burkina Faso, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sudan and Chad, referring to a decision taken at the 7th CEN-SAD summit held in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, on June 1 and 2, 2005, launched the Great Green Wall (GGW) initiative. This initiative was subsequently approved in 2007 by the African Union under the name Great Green Wall Initiative for the Sahara and the Sahel.

Message from the Executive Secretary

Dear partners,
Dear sustainable development stakeholders,
Dear visitors,

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the official website of the Pan-African Agency of the Great Green Wall (PAGGW).

The Great Green Wall Initiative for the Sahara and the Sahel is much more than an environmental project. It embodies an ambitious collective African vision, based on the restoration of degraded lands, strengthening resilience to climate change, restoring landscape biodiversity, food security, and creating sustainable economic opportunities for the benefit of communities in the Saharo-Sahelian zone and the Circum-Sahara. Through this Initiative, member states reaffirm their common commitment to creating Rural Poles of Sustainable Production and Development and transforming territories into zones of economic prosperity by restoring the viability and valorization of Natural Capital and productive systems.
