Regional Projects of the Great Green Wall

The GGW benefits from growing support and increasing interest from the international community in the context of renewed attention and international commitments to land restoration as a global solution to improve livelihoods and combat climate change.

The main regional projects currently supporting the Great Green Wall are:

SURAGGWA project
THE PROJECT

SURAGGWA

The 10-year Scaling-Up Resilience in Africa's Great Green Wall (SURAGGWA) programme aims to enhance ecological impacts and climate resilience across the Sahel, while substantially increasing carbon sequestration through landscape restoration. The programme is funded by the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and implemented by FAO, the National GGW Agencies of member countries, PAGGW and several partners. It aims to restore and rehabilitate approximately 2 million hectares of agro-sylvo-pastoral land while sequestering 65 million tonnes of CO2-eq in 8 GGW countries and strengthen GGW institutions over the next 10 years, contributing to the GGW's goals of large-scale land restoration, rural job creation and carbon dioxide equivalent sequestration by 2030.

THE PROJECT

ACD

Action Against Desertification (ACD) is a dedicated FAO programme created in 2015 to support the implementation of the GGW initiative to restore drylands and degraded lands to combat the adverse social, economic and environmental effects of land degradation and desertification. Thanks to funding from the European Union and various donor countries, ACD has enabled restoration interventions on more than 160,000 hectares of degraded agro-sylvo-pastoral land in 12 countries (as of November 2025).

THE PROJECT

UNCCD GGW Accelerator

The UNCCD GGW Accelerator, Great Green Wall Accelerator, was launched alongside the 4th session of the One Planet Summit on January 11, 2021 in Paris. It is made possible thanks to financial support from nine (9) international donors (World Bank, African Development Bank, European Investment Bank, Green Climate Fund, FAO, UNCCD, French Development Agency). It aims to make this initiative a key driver of sustainable development during this crucial decade leading up to 2030.

THE PROJECT

Regional Support Programme – Inclusive Green Financing Initiative (IGREENFIN)

Greening agricultural banks and the financial sector to foster climate resilience and low emissions for smallholder farmers in five West African countries participating in the GGW. The programme is funded by the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and implemented by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and its partners.

GGW Climate Change Adaptation project
THE PROJECT

GGW CCARSP

The Great Green Wall Climate Change Adaptation Regional Support Project (GGW CCARSP), funded by the GEF and implemented by IFAD and its partners, aims to improve access to best practices, encourage innovation and digital transformation, and facilitate mutual learning among Great Green Wall countries. By strengthening regional knowledge exchange, the project supports greater sustainability and increased resilience to climate change impacts in the Sahel.

WFP Sahel Resilience Programme
THE PROJECT

WFP Sahel Resilience Programme

Over the past five years, WFP and its partners have restored more than 300,000 hectares across the Sahel, transforming the lives of 4 million people in 3,400 villages. This progress has improved food availability, nutrition and resilience to economic shocks – reducing the need for humanitarian assistance.

Knowledge for Action – Great Green Wall (CAGMV)
THE PROJECT

Knowledge for Action – Great Green Wall (CAGMV)

The CAGMV programme enables key GGW stakeholders to improve their knowledge management and sharing mechanisms, develop learning and data platforms, promote dialogue at national and regional levels, and finance innovations. It also strengthens policies and institutions as well as the capacities of national and regional GGW agencies. It provides a fundamental regional base for European Union projects within the GGW funded at the national level.
